Default Finally getting it!

I have been trying to teach myself butterfly for the last year by observing others do it and watching instructional videos on Youtube, without much success.

A few weeks ago I ordered the Betterfly for Everybody video, and progressed more in 5 sessions than in all the previous months of exhausting attempts.

What really did it for me was to forget about kicking and focus on "pulsing", as Terry calls it. Switching my focus from lower body towards upper body undulation, leading with my head, made all the difference in the world. I was previously frustrated trying to lift my hips high, but now that happens naturally when I push my chest down and stretch my arms as far as I can.

As I build up confidence and timing I have opted to do 10 x 50 meter reps in which I do the first 25 in butterfly and come back in freestyle with 20 seconds between reps. My aim is to move up to full 50s in butterfly in the next few weeks.

My best competitive stroke is breaststroke, and am a decent freestyle swimmer, but I must say that the feeling of fluidity and harmony that I have begun experencing in butterfly is definately unique.

Here is another set that Terry told me about and I have found it really useful.
1. 8x25 with 20 seconds rest
2. 8x25 with 10 seconds rest
3. 8x25 with 5 seconds rest
4. 8x25 with 20 seconds rest

I am practicing to swim the 200m fly in Masters meets and this set really makes me focus on keeping form.
Enjoy your ride. A smooth Fly is a joy to perform and to watch.
