Thanks for the idea.
May we swim with ease at the speeds we choose.
Thanks, Grant, for confirming there's something to this slow swimming thing. Maybe Terry should include a chapter entitled something like "To Swim Fast, You Have To Swim Slow" in his new book.

Default 2.50 works

I began my paced lengths at 2.50 tonight, decreasing by 0.05 seconds each length, and in most cases, it lowered my stroke count by at least one. Swimming the slower tempos really works your balance and streamlining. You have to stay really long and stretched, or you fall off the rail. Length=25y.
2.50: 12
2.45: 11
2.40: 11
2.35: 10
2.30: 11
2.25: 11
2.20: 10
2.15-1.80: 11
1.75-1.55: 12
1.50-1.30: 13
1.25: 14

Default 2.75, not so much

I began my paced lengths at 2.75 on the tempo trainer tonight, decreasing 0.05 seconds each length, and the results were not much different from beginning at 2.50, but afterward, I felt a sense of lightness and buoyancy in the water that I have never felt before. I think I'll spend some time in 2.75 territory for awhile.

2.75-2.55: 10-11
2.50: 11
2.45: 10
2.40: 11
2.35: 10
2.30: 11

2.20-2.05: 11
2.00: 12
1.95-1.80: 11
1.75-1.55: 12
1.50-1.35: 13
1.30-1.25: 14
1.20-1.10: 15
1.05-1.00: 16

There seems to be a lot of gold to be mined from the ultra-slow swimming I've been doing lately. When I began this experiment, I could feel my feet being much lower than my trunk at very slow speeds, but today I had the sensation of being prone on a balance ball with my head low and my feet high at very slow speeds, and I was able to reproduce it at will. Also, I had been using my legs for balance at these slow speeds, but today I didn't need them for balance. They just floated up behind me. It was an amazing sensation.

I only had an hour to swim today, and I wanted to get in some fast laps too, so instead of speeding up by .05 sec, my interval today was .10. Length=50m.
2.75-2.65: 28
2.55: 29
2.45-2.35: 30
2.25-2.05: 31
1.95: 32
1.85: 33
1.75: 34
1.65-1.55: 35
1.45: 36
1.35: 37
1.25: 39
1.15: 41
1.05: 46
0.95: 48
0.85: 50

Default Question?

What are you doing to get your balance forward and your feet up like that?

Ken

The short answer is I'm swimming painstakingly slowly, experimenting with what I need to do to make my body horizontal in the water. The more detailed answer, which involves adaptations based upon my anatomy (short waist, long legs), includes keeping my lead arm straight out in front of my body instead of down at an angle, "sitting" on my shoulder joint with my chin/head, bending my knees slightly and keeping my hips extended in skate. I don't think words do it justice, though. A lot of things have to line up correctly. Its an experiential thing.

You're right, Pat. I think I found my buoy, and how to balance over it.

So true! When will you be back in the pool, Pat?

The ultra-slow swimming continues to bear fruit. I continue to drop strokes as my body learns to be more balanced and streamlined at very slow speeds. From tonight, L=50m:
2.75: 27
2.70: 28
2.65-2.60: 29
2.55-2.45: 28
2.40: 29
2.35: 28
2.30: 29
2.25: 28
2.20-2.15: 30
2.10-1.85: 31
1.80: 32

ps: an added benefit I've noticed is that the size of the "rail" I ride on each side of my body as I skate/glide feels larger as a result of the slow swimming.

I feel like a fish out of water and always have! but while I'm searching...
I think I'm finding the answers...Especially when asking for help!
It is not a trait I'm comfortable with...but I'm going to find the answer!

Will it take years?
I enjoy the belly dancing but I'm trying to run with the aerobic crazies
or will I find my nitch?

Can anyone of you guys help me?
Is it the Lead?
someone told me to get a play list!
is it I'm not organized?
do I have my batteries for my equipment!
or is it that I love to have someone by my side and a side kick?
Is it natural for me to want, have & hold onto that?
am I too needy?

come on and dance!
why is it so hard for me to find a buddy?
every one wants, needs a mentor... don't they?
Lou Tharp could be one of mine!

and the Search and the answers ....(hi guys

and flppr I did say
"you lead "
I will follow I'm still here!
