Default Practice and Obsession

My late T'ai-Chi master passed on a story to me which she had learned from her master in China:

A martial artist visited a T'ai-Chi master and asked:

"Master, I wish to learn the T'ai-Chi Ch'uan. How long will it take me?"

"Ten years." the master replied.

"So long? Then I will practice twice as hard as others. How long will it then take me?"

"Twenty years." replied the master.

Confused the man insisted: "If I practice, night and day, never stopping for rest, and dedicate my life solely to master the T'ai-Chi Ch'uan then how long will it take me?"

"Thirty years." the master replied.

"How can this be!" the man cried out "that the harder I try the longer it will take!?"

The master answered: "If you have one eye on your goal then you have only one eye left for your practice."

I guess it's true that you do have to enjoy and focus on the journey, not just the destination. Mind you, in today's modern hectic lifestyles, we're probably all multi-eyed monsters with eyes in all directions!
