![]() Natalie Coughlin didn't qualify for the Rio Olympics, but she said she isn't retiring. At age 33, she still must have that burning desire to commit to a brutal training regime required of top-level competitive swimmers. Regardless of what happens, Coughlin has had an impressive swimming career.

![]() Not really. He is 31, which is about the age at which most competitive swimmers have historically reached their peak. But the reason why that is the peak age is less clear: Is it really the peak age for biological reasons, or is it the age at which other factors begin to interfere with training. Phelps has already acquired two such interferences - a wife and a son.
