![]() Will be based on some quotes I took from that Times article
Vollmer: “The butterfly is really about grace and rhythm. I think about being light in the water and everything moving forward as I swim.“ Her coach Teri McKeever, also US Women's Olympic Coach: "It’s important to her to get out and be ahead with rhythm, rather than force and power.” Vollmer again: “People struggle in the last 25 meters; that's when I really focus on . . . staying as light as I can with my arms, not punching down with my legs." This is perfect because this coming week we'll release a new TI e-book on butterfly, which aims to teach exactly the same qualities.

![]() Great selection of quotes, Terry. They are in complete contrast to a set of absolute rules one of my swimmers approached me with last week from a website, which stated that butterfly kick is all about that pushing down, not any body roll or hip drive.

![]() Awesome clip.
As of 2012, experts still believe that the upbeat(s) in the dolphin kick action applied to butterfly is merely a recovery phase prior the only important phase which are the downbeat(s). I think these experts are wrong. Thanks for the clip, and thanks for the quotes. |

![]() If I understand the jargon correctly, the downbeat (with your feet) is when your hips go up and the upbeat is when your hips go down. I think of things more with my hips than my feet. When my hips go down (the upbeat) my hips push my whole body to the surface, which then makes the arm recovery easier. So I would say that the upbeat is really important
