swimming freestyle with a diving mask

Does anyone have experience swimming freestyle with a diving mask? I am interested in using this in open water, because it will cover both my nose and eyes, and I am allergic to something in fresh water lakes.

I know that a diving mask is a bad idea if you want to dive off a platform, but this won't be an issue for me. Does it tend to leak if you are looking perpendicularly to the direction you move in, as would be the case when swimming freestyle, or will it work as well as goggles in this sense?
