Default Mental Focus - Sustainability

Essential Mental Skills for Swimming

Of these four factors, the mental side has the potential to make the biggest impact on overall performance because it has significant influence on the effectiveness of the other three.

PHYSICAL – fitness, speed, endurance, strength, power etc
TECHNICAL – technique, skills, dives, starts, turns and finishes
TACTICAL – pacing, strategies, racing skills
MENTAL – relaxation, self belief, attitude, focus etc.

I would like to hear from you on how you prepare and sustain mental focus during your swim preferably a longer swim 1mile or more?

Thanks
George

Bahhh I'm not sure. All I know is that recently, a guy contacted me as he felt he had reached a plateau. His mission was to time trial on a slow rate (that's my version of DPS work). Complained that he couldn't go under 3:00 for a 200m at 50 strokes per minute.

I show up, ask for a 100m, comes up in 1:35. So I'm like well.... Not about to go under 3:00 if we can't even go under 1:30 over 100m.

Long story short, I didn't change anything in the technique, but simply asked him to try *harder*. Next 100 came up in 1:25. Then we tested the 200 and it came up to 2:59.

Mental focus is definitely what was lacking in this case...
