Perhaps this article will help.

Shoulder flexibility has a great impact on lead hand position. If you are less flexible (or tense), your lead hand will have to be lower to prevent the hips from sinking.

Many things in swimming are compromises. A deeper lead hand is a compromise that allows the hips to be higher. The lead arm will cause drag, but not as much as low hips.
