Skating Drill - 45 or 90 degree rotation?
I've been doing the TI drills for about a month now and today I've finally succeeded in doing the skating drill without swallowing gallons of water! I am, however, unsure whether I did it correctly as I have read contradictory information regarding the body position. My TI book says the following:
"Swivel your head and look directly at the bottom, rolling to your side as you do. After you look down, pause and check: Are you looking directly down? Are you balanced on your side with your shoulder pointing directly up? Is your extended hand below your head?"
To me, this sounds like a 90 degree roll. Some videos on Youtube show more of a 45 degree roll though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neokpjNKMYE

I think the book is not the newest edition :o)
It's about 45°. That's the same position you will have when you swim whole stroke. 90° leads to over rotation in whole stroke.

It feels a bit different, so it takes a bit to get comfortable and to get YOUR right position. Try out what happens if you change the "spearing point" of the arm. Put it more up and down (y-axis) and more in and out (x-axis). The point you can comfortably hold the arm without loosing balance is your right point. And it's rather out and rather a bit down than closer to the mid line or to the surface.
just additionally to Inge's very good hints. Don't think too much in degrees. Try to rotate as little as possible. This means a relaxed recovery with elbow not behind the scapular plane and finger-tips drawing a line at surface and "risky inhale" (surface just at mouth-angle of turned head) should be possible.
