Great stuff Terry!
We use the same idea as SPL but refer to the concept as swim GOLF. A swimmer's GOLF score is a combination of their time plus their stroke count (usually for a 25). Each rep. the swimmer is trying to lower their GOLF score by either decreasing their time or stroke count.

Again, great info!

Hi Pelu. By increasing the tempo a little you will be stressing your SPL count. This will eventually have to suffer by increasing - say, going up to 19 from 18. This is the point Terry is talking about that you now hold this new critical tempo until you consistently bring your SPL back to 18. In theory you have now made a lasting improvement in swimming faster.

I have a question. When you increase the SPL is that adding or subtracting the numbers of strokes? I'm a new swimmer and I would think that 15 is better than 18. So if I start at 18 and increase tempo I want to have less than 18 SPL?

Makes a lot sense. Longer strokes + higher turnover = more efficiency + greater propulsion per stroke.

It seems to be exact strategy Sun Yang uses.

Great stuff as ever Terry. I am embarking now on actually getting down to some speed training and I am sure its going to pay off big time!! On another matter, this is the first time I have noticed the word Algorithm in your output. It is interesting to me because I am being courted at the moment about writing a book for a big publisher on my acting work. It just so happens that one of the central "planks' of the work involves describing it as the "abstraction algorithm"! I have been playing with the expression for a couple of years now; still not sure if it is right for me, but interesting that we have both happened upon it for differing reasons. ( Mine is about the process of putting a feeling, lets say, through a process of abstract movement and abstract sound which eventually results in more life-like acting). Anyway, hope you are well. best regards as ever. Ed
