Interesting on the subject of stroke counts... I just watched bob bowman's fina presentation (the golden coaches clinic) in which he discussed some of phelps' training. stroke counts were a big part of it. he had time/stroke count goals for every stroke. in fly, it was time, minus 10. so if mp was swimming a 50 lc fly in 27 seconds, he was aiming for 17 strokes. he once did a 25 in 15 in practice.

Dave and Pam
Thanks for your comments. Katie doesn't have to keep track of her lap count while racing. Nor did I have to do so. Competitive swimmers have lap counters--cards on a long stalk that a friend or teammate dips into the water as you approach the turn on odd lengths. So the cards read 1, 3, 5, etc.
As for counting strokes, if you do it all the time in practice, it simply becomes second nature.

Hey Pam thanks. This is how it is for me. Lets say I am doing a 1000TT. I struggle to keep count of lengths, let alone SPL. My watch also counts lengths though what do I do as I approach length 36 or 38? Stop and have a look at my watch? and loose time, no I keep going and hope I get it right. And that's just counting lengths. If I try to count SPL as well I usually get to about length 4 or 5 and I'm lost on both. Maybe its something we have to work at to get to Katie and Terry standard though its really hard when I am focusing on other technique things as well. I would love to hear your and other perspectives on this, maybe even Terry's. or is it just like this for me?
