I think you answered your own question, but an elevated head causes the hips to sink. That creates more drag. More drag requires more energy to overcome, or you simply move slower. In addition, having the head in the proper place makes it easier on th eneck and the shoulders to get all the other pieces to fall into place.

Hi, could someone please tell me the brand and model of the goggles Terry is wearing? They look great and I think will be much better than the small ones which I'm currently wearing.

Nicole
The most important thing is the feeling you get. You want to feel that your head is resting on the water. And as a result your whole body feels lighter in the water.
Who and where is your TI instructor?
A saving of 10 seconds is pretty considerable.

My head is always elevated. My TI instructor used to tell me that every single lesson but I can't seem to correct it. I find the water gets into my nose when my head is in line with my body.
Why is it important? I haven't really understood the importance of it yet.
I measured 100m with my head elevated and 100 m with my head straight and the latter look 10 seconds less so I guess it must be related to speed.

The best advise ever. As a competitive swimmer and water polo player, my head has always been craned to look for the wall and the ball. As a tri swimmer, my legs always dragged behind my hips, but were hanging low.

While I can't swim 9 miles like Terri, I can knock out 2 without a sweat and be ready for the bike without foot cramps. I was observing a young gentleman the other day at my gym working with a group of even younger Cambodians (short gals) teaching them drills such as the Superman and Knife and suggested the "no wrinkles", he immediately recognized the value to such a statement. They improved their Superman glide by easily a meter each with such an easy observation.
