Indeed, way to go, Betsy!

Your account of race day made me grin in so many ways. To start out with a half-ironman seems positively reckless - but the fact that you had so much fun and finished so well proves that you were right to dare it. Very impressive!

Congratulations, Betsy!
The nice thing about swimming is that the heaviest investment is in mindfulness and focus. There can be just as much focus and technique in the other disciplines, as I am sure Shane has told you in your work together, but nice gear can be a big part :)

Way to go Betsy!
;)Great job! I can identify with you on the bike. I'm a decent swimmer and usually get blown away on the bike. It is frustrating! I wear Newtons as well, and love them! I also love Hammer! So... Full distance on the horizon?

Great job capturing the "My 1st 1/2 iron" experience. I finished my 1st 1/2 iron distance tri the same weekend @ Muncie Endurathon (longest-running US 1/2 iron,BTW). As a VERY poor swimmer 18mo ago, I thank TI DVD "Easy Freestyle" for getting me through that 1.2mi OWS. My bike & run pacings were too fast, so last 4mi of my run were a crampfest. But the sense of accomplishing what you once thought impossible makes it all worthwhile.

Betsy,
Welcome to triathlon! Are you hooked?
My goodness, how brave (or foolish) to make a 70.3 your FIRST triathlon. As you discovered in transition, it can be helpful to do a few sprints to get the whole triathlon equipment/transition/timing down. But, nice time for a very hard distance in the first try!
Shorter distances can be really fun, and of course only take 1.5 - 3 hours or so at the speeds you put up for the 70.3.
