Hello Becky, Thank you for you very good questions. I just returned from Boulder. Last Saturday (Aug. 5), I completed the Boulder 70.3 Ironman (time 7:44:12). It was very interesting and fun to return to Boulder and swim in the same lake and ride some of the same bike course in a relatively short time period (about 56 days) since the Boulder Full IM event. The Boulder 70.3 run was not at the same location as the Boulder Full IM run. The Boulder 70.3 run was staged out at the Boulder Reservoir and was on dirt roads, a trail and a paved road with many beautiful views!

Becky, back in June my decision ahead of time not to complete the full distance 140.6 Ironman Boulder event was based on consulting with my triathlon coach, evaluating my 6 month training volume prior to the Boulder Full Ironman event, fitness testing performed with my coach just prior to the 140.6 Boulder IM race and knowledge/experience of completing four full 140.6 events in past years. I completed the 140.6 Redman (Oklahoma) 3 times (2011, 2012, 2013) and also completed the HITS 140.6 in my home town of Corpus Christi in 2012. You can email me at howard.steve1@gmail.com and I will be glad to discuss your Boulder Ironman considerations.

This is the second time the boulder ironman has come up this week. I am 48 and set a goal to complete one by the time I am 50. Thinking about biting the bullet and going for it one year earlier. I did a few half ironmans a few years ago, but only kept up the running and added weight lifting. I am worried about injury by ramping up in the 3 disciplines. Any advice?
Also, can you speak more to how you decided not to complete the ironman ahead of time. I am not sure I could be so wise. Have you completed an ironman since?
Thanks,
Becky from Tucson

Very interesting post. I am about to do an IM and I have taken a lot from your post. Often the mind is the most important element of any endurance event but also realising that you need to listen and respond to your body on the day. I always rely on the various mantras I have practiced involving my TI based swimming and I have found that learning to relax as I swim is the key to a good overall experience. Interestingly this is just as important on both the bike and the run. I am 66 years old and I take great encouragement from seeing fellow 'age groupers' in the way they manage their approach to IM events. TI has a lot to offer in its core principles both in and out of the pool.

This post is a real inspiration to me. I don't aspire to an Ironman, by any means, but the little events I do train for keep me going. Many times I'm tempted not to sign up for a race because I'm out of shape and don't have time or the inclination to put in all the work I need to to do my best. This is a reminder to give myself permission to do races anyway, using whatever time I have to train as well and as intelligently as I can, to set smart goals,
and to enjoy the journey!
