Fly is too intimidating for other pool users when swimming in lanes. Most other strokes can be kept within the width of the shoulders, though from my observation a lot of people are not aware of that. Backstroke swimmers and wide kicking breaststroke swimmers can also be a menace.

Butterfly is the style that takes the most energy, compared with the other three, and the hardest in training to get the right balance of kick impulse and moving arms forward. It takes time to master and sync that balance, but butterfly is the most beautiful of all styles (my opinion). Our coach used to explain us that each swimmer has a different body capability for swimming. Factors such as long arms or legs, vs short, strong contexture vs skinny, etc. We long distance swimmers tend to have long arms, not to kick much, alternate breathing, etc.. breastroke needs strong kick.. etc.. each style is different and every swimmer (after years of mastering the discipline) adopts a particular style.

Mario, I use to struggle like you, until I realized my arm stroke was wrong! What I was doing was using my shoulders and all of my arms to push through the water and that made my arms weary and late to recovery. I had to retrain my arms by doing skull out drills and skull in by bending at elbows at your neck line, not at waistline. The power comes from your fore arms and hands when timed correctly with head out/waste down. You'll feel your recovery stroke gliding across the surface. Also, you'll picture your body as a skipping stone instead of going up and down, meaning going deeper under water. Go to YouTube and search swimfast. A good place to start.

I have tried for years to learn to swim the butterfly in a relaxed manner. I have taken private lessons, attended clinics, studied the Total Immersion film yet I am still "butter struggling." I have no problem going the first 25 but by the time I finish the second length of the pool I am spent and I do not even try to swim the third length. Something is terribly wrong with my timing and I can't figure out what. Yes, I will keep trying.
