The sprint triathlon is really pretty short, although it may not feel that way if you are just beginning. The swim is short, too. But it’s too short to swim slowly, and then make it up on the bike or run. Because of the short distance of the swim and the race you can afford to swim faster than you can in an Olympic race. In fact, if “swimming harder” helps you swim faster, smart racing would dictate that you do so.

Of course, there are limits. Swim too hard, and you will sacrifice your speed on the bike or run. And if you swim harder than your technique will accommodate, you will spend too much energy to swim slower.

Because the sets in this plan are short, you will imprint faster swimming. And if you can increase your effort level while maintaining a better stroke, you are encouraged to do so. The plan is designed to optimize your time in the pool so that you end up with faster swimming. Swimming longer repeats, or spending more time in the pool might result in slower swimming for your race. And it definitely won’t help you devote more time and energy to bike and run training.

Train the way you want to race. Get in. Swim well and fast. Get out. Move on!

CHOOSE THIS PLAN IF YOUR ARE:

➢ Are a TI devotee, and are ready to spend more time swimming whole stroke, and less time drilling.
➢ Swim in a short course pool (25 yards or meters).
➢ Are training for a sprint triathlon.
➢ Are training for a longer triathlon, but it takes you longer than 2:20 to swim 100 yards/meters.
➢ Are a swimmer who wants to develop speed and endurance to swim a faster 750 yards/meters.
➢ Bought a “traditional” triathlon training plan, but don’t see the purpose in mindless “kick, pull, and swim” sets.
➢ Are ready for a swim training plan that creates “habitual coordination” and improves fitness.
