Can you just clarify please - do you mean the back of your head is 6 inches below the surface, or your face???

The back of your head should be just breaking the surface I think. If it is 6-8 inches deep on any stroke, then it sounds like you are pushing yourself downwards, when you should be horizontal in the water.

When thinking about how your head should be positioned there are two ways to monitor it
1) How it feels (to you)
2) How it looks (to an observer)

The first is the one that matters to you. Therefore the guide you use is a body-sensing guide. It should feel "weightless" because you release its weight or hang it.

If an observer -- who has a practiced eye for TI technique -- tells you it's submerged, then you may be pushing it down. If so check again, are you releasing it or trying to put it lower.
