Default Improve your time with a -5 +5 set

Discussing swimming with a friend last week I mentioned that I was a little stalled at getting my mile time down from 28 minutes (1.45/100m) to my target for the year of 26.40 (1.40/100m)

His suggestion was to practise 16x100, swimming 1.40's off 1.50, or in other words, take 5 seconds off my pace and add +5 seconds rest to my race pace after each 100?

This simple approach seemed logical and achievable and I guess once completed the next stage would be 200's off 3.30? and then 400's off 6.50?
