Default Breaststroke breathing without the leg kick

So, I'm trying to teach myself breaststroke using the DVD series. I'm still at the early stages, arm sweep only, no leg kick. Problem I have is I don't seem to get my head up out of the water enough to catch a breath. I really want to try and crack that before I add the legs. I can feel my chest lifting out of the water on insweep as I keep my palms angled down, but still not enough lift. Thoughts anyone - do I need to start with my hands wider apart, change the insweep, etc...? Hard to say without a video I know, but any ideas appreciated to try and get me pass this roadblock!

When your doing the outward arm sweep are you also leaning in on your chest as you out sweep ? If you lean in on the out sweep the response back from the water should be to help lift your chest back up as you sweep your hands back in to breathe. This constant body dolphin or motion is what drives your stroke .

Thanks for the tip, I'll try and focus on pushing down on my buoy next time I'm in the pool.
