Default stiff shoulders and heavy legs

Hi,
I've got a question about stiff shoulders and heavy legs...
I'm helping a friend to improve his crawling; his biggest problem is stiff shoulders: They are so stiff that he can't manage to do a good SG because he can't stretch good enough.
In top of this he's a "compact" guy, pretty short, heavy boned and brawny, and his legs sink, much more than what I will say is normal.
Those things together are giving him a very hard time and I'm running out of options to help him improve his swimming stile.
Is there anything he can do to help compensate this things so to manage a good, relaxed swim-stile?
