Default A Reason to swim in open water

Lately I have begun to think about raising awareness of the drowning rates of African American and Latino population. Both groups drown at a rate three times more than those of European origin. So, I have decided that next year I am going to do a series of Channel crossings to highlight this problem. I am hoping to raise money for a designated group that is actively trying to bring the drowning rate down. So, although it would be an ambitious plan here are the crossings I am looking at trying in the near and not too distant future.

Summer 2010 - Catalina Channel Relay (This is with TI swimmers from this forum). Total distance 21 miles.

Fall 2010 - Kalohi Channel; Lanai to Molokai, HI (solo). Total distance 9.3 miles.

Summer 2011 - Kaulakahi Channel; Kauai to Niihau, HI (solo). Total distance 17 miles.

Summer 2013 - Catalina Channel (solo). Total distance 21 miles.

An ambitious - and probably insane plan, but we don't know unless we try

It still blows my mind that less than a year ago I never thought I would learn to swim and already I've done two Alcatraz Crossings (and preparing for a third this month), planning a long distance swim in October that no African American - that I know of - has attempted solo, and the swims above. It just goes toshow the confidence that TI can give folks who once thought that swimming would be out of their reach. More to come!

Keep Swimming!
