Waiting 60 seconds to report each spam post could take all day, with the amount that's here now.

Rhoda raises a fair point.
How are things going re: mooted spam prevention measures?

I notice this forum is on vBulletin 3.6.8, which is some way behind the curve now. I understand v.3.7 introduced built-in spam prevention measures.

I also don't understand why the same accounts are allowed to keep posting spam. Those accounts should be deleted, no?

Could Keith tell us what specific things are being done, please, because it IS frustrating.

Thanks guys.

Ant,

You and Rhoda speak for us all ! Frustrating it certainly is. Call me naive, but I fail to see the amusement the spammers get in trying to destroy a site such as this. I have mentioned a number of times in the past of how similar spamming "events" destroyed one of my favorite ski sites. That site had a great bunch of people sharing skiing techniques and experiences; but the spam became too frustrating and too annoying. (Fortunately before its demise, through the site, I had met a great ski instructor from Montreal who shared technique and on hill instruction with me.) Perhaps these spammers are simply against all "learning"?

Great to see Rhoda's return to the forum.

Mike

As far as I can see, the spammers are trying to sell shoes, sportswear, medicines, and in the case of the Russian spammers, dating services or possibly porn sites.

I know little or nothing about software but it seems to me that it should be possible to block them.

A thought on how to handle spam on this site or any other for that matter. From my understanding Terry and Keith are working on the issue. So what can we do as fans of this site till it gets handled?
It is in the relm of personal responsibility. If the span is having an unpleasant effect on you - change your reaction. The spam is not doing it yo you. It is your reaction to the span and thus it is in your power to change your reaction.
Happy mindfulness.

I had another look at some advice on a vBulletin spam forum.

From what I gather, this 2-step combo has good results:

1. Requiring new users to answer a question that's unique to the forum topic
eg. "Total Immersion was founded by T___ L____ - enter his full name".

2. Moderating the first one or two posts by new users. Apparently you can tell vB (don't know which version you need) to put new users in a moderation group for their first n posts.

I do note you have reCaptcha and email verification turned on. The concensus seems to be that reCaptcha gets hacked easily.

I know there's nothing more annoying than unsolicited advice, but just trying to help.
