Default Best. Swim. Ever.


I have enjoyed fleeting moments of it, but later couldn't recapture the feeling. Now I am confident I've got it locked in, after today's practice. And if I do struggle to achieve it, I know I can follow the same steps to get it back:

Warm up with 6-8 laps of slow breaststroke, really a series of superman glides, thinking about feeling bouyant and slippery, feeling a thin wave of water flowing over my back, feeling my butt and calves and heels just break the surface of the water. Easy glides.

Several laps of skate-1 stroke-skate-roll to sweet spot for air. Think about balance, just reaching the "tipping point", leaning in on my chest, legs bouyant behind me. Try to get maximum distance out the stroke--not by muscling it, but by rocking from hip to hip in a coordinated effort.

Several laps of skate-3 strokes-skate-roll to sweet spot for air. This is actually easier than doing one stroke at a time, I think. Less time rebalancing after the roll and you get some momentum going.

Then at some point I transition effortlessly into swimming.

Feels a million times better than ever before, when I was diverting all that energy into unnecessary drag. Actually, it is not a quantitative change, but a qualitative one. A whole different experience. Can't wait to swim again tomorrow (and the next day and the next day...) About a year of intense practice, followed by about 10 months of on and off practice. Worth every second!

well done you!!!!

I myself am just getting the hang of balance and fully understanding its imporance
My problem just now is transfering from sweet spot to just enough as my head seems just a little too deep to merely rotate my head..
