Default kicking - straight legs or not

I have seen that some people kick with a straight leg. Are there any benefits to this?

Well, the leg should be straight with just a slight knee bend as it gets ready for the downbeat . A totally straight leg on the upbeat and downbeat without a slight knee bend would probably mean that the leg is to rigid .

Mel Benson actually bends at the knees.

Shelly is an extreme example that almost no one can follow, just like Sun Yang.
She floats like a cork (not sure but it seems this way), has extremely streamlined ankles and very good hip flexor flexibility.

An example of her swimming efficiency:
She can even make her straight throwing arm recovery help her forward speed.
How does she do that?
Watch her leg position when she starts her recovery. The whole leg is angled up.
The acceleration of the recovering arm is supported from that upward angled opposite leg, just like the leg supports a throw on dryland.
Whats the reaction force from the water on that leg?
Up and FORWARD. Her straight arm recovery helps to move her forward via the reaction force on the water from the leg!
If you dont have this leg starting angle together with those flexible ankles its not going to work this way, but for her, it does.
After that, the arm has gained momentum, that drags her forward a bit when its extended in the water and decellerated again.
You know how you can move forward standing on a carpet taking the carpet along on a wooden floor? Thats the same principle. Use the extra resistance on the pushoff and let the momentum take you a bit forward on the reduced resistance. in swimming its the water equivalent of a ratched mechanism.
The breaststroke kick is also a water ratchet mechanism, but here you create a huge drag during the recovery motion. The beauty of Shellys movements is that she never creates drag in her leg action. Its all happening in the shadow of the body.

There's a difference between kicking from the hip utilizing the entire leg and kicking from the knee. For most swimmers the latter usually results in an increase in drag, less efficiency in the kick and less power in the kick. Kicking from the hips does not have to be a very rigid and tight legged kick.
