Default hip drive in backstroke

i have been working on my backstroke the past several months and i really love it. today i was swimming some long slow strokes, really stretching from my toes to the opposite finger tips and feeling the connection between hip drive and propulsion, much like in freestyle. so am i imagining such a connection?...how important is hip drive in backstroke?

Have you done the one-arm backstroke drill from the DVD drill sequence? In this drill, you're going from hand lead sweet spot on one side to head lead sweet spot on the other side. One of the purposes of this drill is to teach you to coordinate your body roll with your armstroke. You can certainly think of this as powering your armstroke with your hip drive.
