Default Pendulum hands

Had an interesting revelation yesterday while doing that balancing drill where you lift one arm out of the water. When I raised my arm to a certain height, as it got closer to the shoulder I became aware of the it's weight. It was as if the arm was a pendulum and could have swung in either direction. So I let it swing backwards into a stroke.
When I focussed on that tipping point for a length of whole stroke back stroke, I took off four strokes from normal relaxed pace. Okay, I wasn't going at a high cadence, but i didn't have to try hard as hard to get down to that stroke count as I've had to do since "losing" my back stroke after briefly finding it in summer 2007.
Just goes to show, it never hurts to revisit all of the drills from time to time.
