Andrew Gemmell, 14:57.29 in heat 8, and Connor Jaeger, 14:59.97, in heat 9, are the only two below the 15-minute mark. Let's see if they can repeat the performance tomorrow in finals. It is my impression that swimming too fast in preliminaries is a dangerous game.

Obviously, if you want to make the team you need to be in the final.

Apart form the times I noticed an old age in these listing is someone 28 or 29. Wow I'm twice that age and then some.

Yes. Peter Vanderkaay is the 'old man' of the bunch and was probably conserving his strength in the preliminaries. We'll soon know. Middle distance freestyle is a young man's game on the whole - and a young woman's game too, it seems, as Janet Evans has shown.

The world rankings changed considerably after yesterday, with a whole group of US Americans in the top fifty, but of course only two can go to the Olympics, and there still doesn't seem to be anyone to challenge Sun.But one never knows. The Olympics are always full of surprises.
