Default Kanreki is Here

In Japan, one's 60th birthday has special meaning. They call it Kanreki and it represents rebirth. Traditionally that meant a more contemplative life. Today, for an increasing number of people, it means a more healthfully active one. Today I've reached that milestone.

Ten and 20 years ago, when I was on the verge of 50 and 40 I didn't exactly welcome those milestones. I just saw them as evidence of 'growing older.' This feels entirely different. I'm anticipating the coming decade with more 'buoyant' feelings than any prior one. Maybe it's wisdom and perspective. Maybe it's managed expectations. In any case I'm grateful to have lived this long, to enjoy remarkably good health, to have a loving and supportive family, and to be doing work that feels more meaningful and inspires greater passion than ever before.

Thanks to all TI Swimmers, and especially to those especially enthused ones who make up the Forum Community for your contribution to that last source of satisfaction and expectation.

All the best on your 60th Terry. You are now the pup in your age group. Happy times.

Default Aloha and congrats!

Happy birthday Terry!

You are an inspiration to us "aging" swimmers.

It looks like my first grandchild will be your birthday twin later today.

A hui ho

Happy Birthday!

You're an inspiration to this somewhat aged swimmer as well.

Default Birthday Haiku for Terry

In honor of Terry’s birthday and his reverence for Japanese culture a brief haiku follows. Hope that I count syllables better than I count laps.

Balanced streamlined dude
Celebrates sixty today
Phelps green with envy
