Default Propulsion

How would you prioritize the propulsive elements of your freestyle?
And once you prioritize, what percentage of each do you think is optimal?
I'm just talking about the things that can move you forward.
So, place them in order of importance from 1 (most important) to 4 (least important) & give each one a percentage so all 4 add up to 100%.
If you know, you might also make 2 lists - one you'd like to achieve & one you are currently using...
Kick
Rotation/weight shift
Lengthen/spear
Pull

The only one I think about is lengthen/spear. The rest happen withhout me thinking about them. So I don't really have more than one item on my list.

Default Purposeful rotation

I've just belatedly discovered purposeful rotation in freestyle and I can feel that it is the engine which provides the power for my propulsion. Everything else is just detail, important though it is. With my new eyes when I look at video of good swimmers whatever their style I see powerful full body rotation. Am I right?

I don't get your point, Ken. If rotation provides the power, you need other "things" to deliver that power forward. Rotation on it's own is 100% useless. Without getting too nit-picky, everything you do in order to swim is a detail. Some contribute more than others, but they're all important. If one of your details contributes 10% to propulsion, why would you downplay it?

Yes. But they're all doing other things, too.

Kevin I think Ken's answer is legitimate...for him at this moment, rotation is what powers him forward. Yes, there are other things delivering the power, but right now, if rotation is the thing that's helped Ken make a quantum leap forward then by all means he should continue to focus on it...and it'd be fine to set other things aside for a bit.

pull 20
lengthen/spear 20
kick 10

A guess and thanks for the puzzle. Also am suspicious that that this is my goal.
May we swim with ease at the speeds we choose.

Maybe I misunderstood Ken.
I took his comment to mean that purposeful rotation is enough to propel & that the other "details" don't matter. That is wrong.
If he meant that because he just discovered purposeful rotation as his primary means of propulsion & he only wants to focus on that for now, that might make sense, but I'm not even sure about that. I'd have to know more about the swimmer & their stage of development.
Ken?

I'd find it hard to believe that anyone would think that only rotating will get you anywhere...but I could be wrong on that. ;)
