It must be a matter of perception. When I don't have goggles on, I have trouble breathing. I tend to hold my breath. You just seem to have the opposite reaction. Perhaps being able to see clearly fools you into thinking your eyes and mouth are clear of the water? Possibly the goggles are causing some turbulence around your face?
Perhaps we should try swimming with out eyes closed.
