Default Being Present Makes it Much Better

In today's 10km Little Red Lighthouse Swim (in the Hudson from 79th St north under GW Bridge to Inwood Canoe Club), the moment I wished for the finish to arrive sooner, my stroke and psyche felt much worse. When I focused on THIS stroke and moment, all was bliss.

This is good.
But, speaking of psyche, why was there a moment when you wished for the finish to arrive sooner?

It sounds exactly like my experience in August.

Coming into it, I was unfit, because of recurring sinus infections and commitments at work. Further I was overweight because of that. The sinus infections made me feel tired so I didn't find alternative workouts.

So starting the race, I felt immediately that I was just hoping to get through this. And I did, but it didn't feel like I was swimming that well. And I fell back in the pack farther than I had the previous year.

3/4 of the way through, I figured the hell with it, I am just going to swim the best I can. I went into one of the best stroke modes I am able to muster, feeling like it was a long series of spearing switches. I began passing people and even though I was working harder than any other point in the race I did not get out of breath.

How to make that state of mind happen earlier, or even at the beginning of the race?

I hope to figure it out a little by next year. Being more fit is going to be part of the answer, but the mental discipline is a lot harder to grasp.

Smile For the fun of it

I have a 1.2 mile open water race on Oct. 2. Because of recent knee surgery I know my time will probably be way off my best. So why do it? The water is beautiful. Last year I had a pod of dolphins swim under me. My friends will be there. Because the Ironman is the following weekend world class athletes use it for a tuneup swim. To top it off, restaurant chefs in the area come to the beach and fix us a wonderful brunch.
