I'd suggest that you keep your arms close to your ears and your hands together, hand over hand, wrist over wrist. Hook the thumb of the top hand around the bottom hand. Your hands should slice their way into the water, and your arms and the rest of your body should follow them in. You should do the same thing after each turn.

But reducing drag on your starts and turns won't win the race if your stroke creates a lot of drag!
