As you start your recovery, when your hand is near your hip, swing out wide leading with your elbow (keeping finger tips low to the water) as if you are trying to give the person next to you a gentle one arm hug.
I find that this automatically gets my elbow in the right position and corrects on of the many issues pointed out by Stuart in the video below.
