I'm not clear on what you mean by maintaining tension in your core. Maintaining tension is the opposite of relaxing, which means that you're going to be wasting lots of energy if you try to maintain tension. What you do want to do is avoid bobbing your head up and down. Instead, focus on letting the movement of your core body lift your head just enough to breathe.
