Another thing to think about is not just when the flick occurs, but when does the preparation for the flick occur? In other words, to be ready for the kick at the right moment, I find it helps to let...

I agree that what you describe is valuable. But I think trying to swim a low SPL on purpose is also valuable. Once you know what SPL you can achieve on purpose this way, you can design workouts to...

I don't think I ever got too far into the "serious training" phase, if at all. But I wanted to qualify for the Coast Guard rescue swimmer program, which meant a 500 yd swim in less than 12:00 to...

I think what the video shows is that EVF is impossible until rotation begins.

That sounds quite a bit like what I've been trying to do lately--really concentrate on the EVF position, to the...

You're probably right that EVF is not dependent on rotation--perhaps what is happening is that I've built a habit I didn't need to build.

But try this: with your feet and body pointing straight...

I just did my first TT practice in a long time today and was thinking this same thing by the end. Which raises a question for me:

I'm finding that I have to rotate fairly far before I can...

Tony,

I'd guess that kicking with a kickboard is no test for the propulsion provided by the kick in whole stroke swimming, because holding the board prevents the rotation. It's not the same...

I'm not a coach, but I think that's not really what TI is about. Rather, the kick helps/powers/perhaps initiates body rotation. At the same time, the downward spearing arm is also...

I recently ran across this post about the 2012 Olympics from Terry, which to me suggests that spearing closer and more steeply, the way I think I'm doing now, might be exactly what I'm after:

If I...

That looks pretty good to me overall, and the flying right hand is completely tamed--well done!

An ok practice this morning but not great. I swam maybe 1800 yds, but found myself getting a bit unfocused at times and losing the EVF position because I didn't have a specific enough plan for each...

Thanks for the video, Coach Suzanne--

I definitely feel like I'm spearing in closer to my head than you are here, with an elbow angle closer to 90 degrees as my fingers enter the water. I need to...

That is interesting--I've been feeling the exact opposite. That is, the farther ahead I spear (and therefore the straighter the spearing arm is), the less rotation occurs. Spearing with a bent elbow...

I'm no coach, but I'm not surprised. I know that sub-4-minute milers (runners) often can't hold their pace on a treadmill because of the absolute regularity of the timing--they can't do one part of...

Charles,

thanks for your thoughts. It never is simple enough to reduce to one thing, is it?

I'm a runner also, but never thought of those 50s as "strides" though of course you're right that they...

Thanks for the input and the kind words. I've been swimming freestyle off and on for about 14 years, TI for about 6 years, so I'm definitely not an overnight sensation. And of course, any 9-year-old...

Speed As A Result, Not A Goal

I haven't been paying much attention to the clock or trying to go fast lately. But today some good things were happening in my stroke and I got curious enough to swim a 50 yd repeat for speed to see...

I swam for not quite 2 hours this morning, again all short lengths (mostly 25 yd repeats), trying to swim every stroke with a good EVF to groove the new feel. I managed a couple of lengths at 10 SPL...

I agree about the wide catch. Another effect of that is that when you rotate onto your side with a wide catch, your lead arm is deeper in the water, which seems to be helping me balance better.

Abhijeet,

very cool that the pillow feeling worked for you! That's excellent. I still have to remind myself of that feel sometimes, and as you say, once you direct your attention to the feel of...

Thanks for chiming in, Terry. It really does seem like TI is applicable to so much more than swimming. In fact, as much as I like getting better at swimming, I'm enjoying getting better at...

So, a day off today--except that I'm addicted to practicing the spear-and-rotate motion in front of a mirror, as Coach Dave does in his video I linked to earlier. My wife is greatly amused.

Thanks--I'm definitely rotating farther than I used to. In fact, my chin now brushes the top of my lead arm sometimes after the arm is fully extended. It feels really good, and sets up the EVF...
