Alcatraz Training

When we train to "escape" from Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay we're looking at temperatures of about 55 degrees. We use wetsuits but a few things that might still apply to cold pool swimming:

An Addendum/Thought

Hi All,

I thought my easy six beater was as easy as a two beater. But, interestingly, when I got to the pool on Saturday it was heated to a ghastly 89 degrees. UGH. I swam a two miler and without...

Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the responses!

Terry, not sure how aesthetically pleasing it looks (six or two) but in terms of how it feels, it feels more flowlicious with the six beat for me. In terms...

Six Beats Vs. Two

Hi All,

Since last February I began using a two beat kick only. It felt like it took up a lot less energy and it seemed a better way to get a smoother stroke. At some point I sort of thought I...

Thanks-Bought It Here

I got it as a gift and I think my bf bought it here at TI site. I have no packaging--just a never ending bleeping TT. I fear that the postal service may be scared to deliver a ticking object!

Oh...

Blasted Tempo Trainer!

Hey Guys,

My bf got me a TT for my bday a few months ago. I've used it maybe three times. But it has a mind of its own and has turned itself on. And it won't turn itself off! I was able to turn it...

Only When I Breathe

Eric,

Yup, I only have the issue with breathing. I'll work with the TT--for sure. I wanted it for speed, etc. but it's nice to see that it can help with technique. Cool. I did do a few TT laps on a...

Thanks so much you guys!

Borate, I clicked on that video but it doesn't seem to work? Symmetry on the hip roll feels hard on that one side. Now that I'm doing a 2BK I feel the asymmetry a lot...

Tempo Trainer &Balancing Stroke

Hello,

I got a TT for my birthday--yay!

I tried her out today and it was pretty cool. I have been working on what feels like a slightly uneven stroke. What I mean here is that I can and do hold...

Love The Simple Life

Lawrence--I love your points. I'm a big fan of #s 1 and 6--I've seen you post about here and both have been super helpful and *simple* to visualize and do. Wide tracks, let the kick happen. Yes.

I...

Yoga, Apples, TwoMilers

Terry, very cool about the yoga. I was more regular with it a while back and found it felt at times like a massage from the inside out. I need to get back to it. It's great that the yoga is making...

Thank You-I'm Inspired!

Hi Terry,

Thanks so much. I'm totally inspired. Of course I went to the pool yesterday and it didn't hurt to have it be one of those days where everything just felt right and I shaved a couple of...

For Fear Of Sounding Like A Turtle...

Hi Terry,

My brisk 50 yarders are now like about 46-47ish when they used to be like 43ish. The effort exerted doing the 2BK ones is about ten thousand times (okay I exaggerate) but we'll say a...

2BK Vacation

Hi All,

I adopted a two beat kick several months ago and really love it. So much smoother, I can feel my hips engaging and I've got relatively fresh legs after swimming a lot of yardage....

What Helped Me

Hi Lawrence,

What helped me get the 2BK pretty quickly was swimming a long distance w/out kicking at all--just let my legs do what they would do naturally or "follow" my stroke. When I did that the...

Where's The Fun is right!

I just got back from a two miler and swam it with so much more ease and I'm now finally back to my old pace. Exciting. I really love swimming now. It's FUN feeling good in the water and that is SO...

Isn't Trashing A Better Calorie Burn??

Funny, but a friend of mine said many years ago that the more efficient you became swimming, the less "exercise" you get. I guess she meant that you just exert less, burn fewer calories....

What Helped Me

Oddly, what helped me was forgetting about my legs for a two mile workout and just letting them mostly dangle. I felt balanced in the water and also I could feel my hips "driving" (or whatever word...

Mileage

Hi Mary,

We did a 6 miler but it was with a screaming fast tide so it felt more like 3 miles. Anyway, we were told to be at about 10,000 yards per week for that. Sounds like you're in good shape! 75...

Triathlon-Saving Energy

Hi,

Just reading this thread and I too have been playing with the 2bk. A few thoughts:

1. One workout I swam two miles and just let my legs sorta dangle--forgot about them per some good advice...

How Much Time, Coach Suzanne?

Great thread! Coach Suzanne, how long would you say, on average, it takes for your body to have that muscle memory in place? I think I'm beginning to regain a bit of speed after maybe two months of...

Definitely Slowed It Down

Hi Eric,

I've had to slow down to swim more efficiently and smoother. The past month or two I've changed the way my arm enters, where it enters, my kick and as a result I have hip drive. Yay and it...

Really Helpful, Coach Eric!

Howdy Eric,

Just returned from my workout. I actually printed this thread out and put it in a plastic bag (desperate times call for desperate measures.) ;)

Anyway, the tip that seemed least likely...
