Waiting too long?

Are you waiting too long? I think you should begin your stroke when you feel the water begin to force your chest up. In effect, you use the upward momentum the water gives to your chest and so use...

Use your water bottle

The best drill for learning to keep your head still is one that used to be part of TI (or at least I think it was): balance your half-full water bottle on your forehead and then do backstroke kick...

Good plan

I presume that you feel that you've wrung all the speed you can out of your present stroke length, so going a couple strokes per length higher is a pretty good plan.

For me, however, there is a...

There's something to this

I noticed this years ago when I had to temporarily stop running and began swimming six days a week instead of three. I immediately gained about ten pounds. I do think it's the coldness of the water...

Spearing

Russ--

Just saw second part of your post. When you move on depends on whether you feel you are not making any further progress--not that you have mastered it, necessarily, but that you just not...

Then don't kick

Then don't kick. Kick adds little propulsion and if you are more comfortable and balanced not kicking, then don't.

BTW--I'd bet that if we saw you swim, we'd see that you are "kicking" to some...

"Health Codes Require You to Shower. . ."

Agree with Salmenic. The sign that says "health codes require you to shower before using the pool" refers to your health, not those who might get into the pool after use by unshowered persons. If...

One Arm Fly

Jamwhite--

I use it daily in my warmups. I find it's a good way to warm up for fly because it's easier on my shoulders. I think it also helps with timing.

I currently do "hand lead" straight arm...

NY1301--

The kick in backstroke is a continous three-beat kick so there is no "still" period when you're truly gliding as in breast or two-beat kick free. But if you slow your arms down and bend...

Drills

Subway2:

The best drills to get this point are underswitch and zipperswitch. The feeling is to focus on extending your non stroking hand as far as possible while trying to hold the "stroking" arm...

Multiple strokes

What works for me is to warm up with drills for each of the strokes and then focus on one stroke or at most two related strokes (free--back or breast--fly) for the rest of the session. I've found...

Try using less arm muscle

Try using less arms and more body; use the least possible force on your arms that permits you to get them out and back into the water. For me, that means feeling like I'm swimming slower although...

Right!

Your elbow should turn outward (toward the surface of the water). BTW it helps to do this if you make the hand entry wide to begin with.

Shuumai--

Thanks for that link. I tried this yesterday (first time I've been to the pool since reading your post) and it seems to help with SPL, if not with speed. The concern I have about it is...

2 beat kick

Scott--

In 2 beat kick, the legs don't do "nothing"--they keep moving, but kick only in synchronization with body roll.

Read the series of articles on H2Oustonswims. org website entitled "Bottom Up...
