Help with breathing - slow down or speed up?

Hi,

I've been swimming TI for a bit. I've gone from thrashing 25m and feeling like I just ran up 10 flights of stairs and was ready to die to swimming 100m with relative ease. The problem is that...

It helped me to get the hang of the 2 beat kick by concentrating on hip rotation. Using your example, if you are spearing with your left hand, concentrate on rotating the right hip up and don't...

Ankle flexibility and balance

Hi Imran,

Welcome to TI. It sounds like you're just getting started and have several issues to work on.

The weak kick is likely a combination of balance and stiff ankles. If you can not do a...

You're right that just rotation of your core won't move you.

This is a bit strange - but I visualize swimming TI style as climbing a ladder in low gravity without using your legs. You could pull...

Hips

I agree with the hip focus. Stop thinking about the kick and try to think about your hips. With your right arm in a catch and your left arm about to spear, your left hip is higher than your right...

Float buoy?

Here's a thought. Take it for what it's worth from someone still learning.

Even though it's frowned upon here, I occasionally use a float buoy for a few laps. In my case it's to float my legs and...

+1 more on the fins.

I struggled with the skate drill where you rotate to air. I have a weak kick. I used fins to give myself some forward momentum and to compensate for some balance issues. ...

I second (or is that third) the use of bobs. If you can't do 10+ bobs and not be out of breath - while standing still - then you won't be able to do it while swimming. Get the timing of blowing for...

If you're like me, you'll tend to pull to one side. Try to swim 5 or 6 strokes with your eyes shut and see if you tend to pull to one side. I tend to pull to the right if I zone out. I think it's...

I still visualize it in my head as kicking with the right foot and driving the right hip up. The left hip goes down in reaction.

Try this on dry land. Stand up. Put most of your weight on your...

I'm pretty green at this as well but here's a thought: does it only happen on one side or does it happen equally on both sides?

I had a problem once where I was swimming up and down in the water. I...

Having been where you're at, I would say you're not balanced front to back. If your toes touch the bottom of a 4 foot pool, you're swimming at something like 30 degrees from horizontal when ideally,...

Looking for TI coach in San Francisco Bay Area

I'm interested in some one-on-one coaching in the South Bay this summer.

I know Shinji coaches out of Fremont but he's not available for a couple of months. Eric de Santo's web site says he's moved...

Coach in South Bay

Hi,

I found this old thread while searching for a TI coach in the SF Bay Area. It appears that Eric Santos is leaving the Bay Area in July. How do I get in touch with David Shen?

Are your hands in front of your shoulders? As opposed to in front of your face?

It could also be that you're starting the glide with a bit of torque in your push/kick from a standing position.

What you're describing is keeping the same swim stroke (SPL) but cranking up the SR. I just recently got a TT and have been playing with it.

I was just wondering if the consensus was...

How to best add burst of speed?

Hi,

I'm fairly new to the TI journey but am learning lots from the forum. I'm at the point where I can do a fair simulation of a TI stroke with a 2 beat kick. However, my SR is really slow.

My...

Backstroke!

Hey, don't forget backstroke. You can practice the same concepts of streamline, balance, incremental SPL improvement, etc. and get a workout but the muscle memory is totally different.
