Glute engagement is HARDLY EVER mentioned in TI. I seem to recall

Well, Brian, I was in the sea yesterday, and did some short bouts of butterfly, perhaps 20 strokes at a time.
Amazingly, despite the rolling waves coming in to shore, I didn;t have to modify the arm...

Brian,

I didn't realise just how much of a fly specialist you were. These are incredible feats. I'm no open water swimmer, so won't be making your list any time soon. I can fly one length (25m)...

Cheers Stu,

I've never come across that video before. There's one disparaging comment on it, but it is actually really useful to know the swimmers' heights, and see how they adapt their stroke.

In...

Hey Coach Stuart, is there any video on YT or Vimeo etc. of you swimming? I recall you have a typical SR of about 1.0s? It would be interesting to see TI swimmers, especially coaches, in normal...

Coming along a bit better now. If I concentrate on breathing with mouth low to surface and neck as long and aligned with spine as possible, the less effort it takes. This is going to end up being my...

Are your glutes slightly engaged (all the time whilst swimming)?

If not, your kick impulse won't travel up your body.
Or, if you do "inside-out" swimming and use your hips to generate the kick,
the...

Thanks for the tip, liolio. I noticed I had too much hip bend after the dive, where I could easily see my feet low in the water, so I remembered your post and deliberately relaxed the hips, keeping...

Progress report: Can now get arms out of water and breathe. Much as in freestyle, the trick that worked for me was to engage glutes and stiffen the body during recovery so I'm more like a surfboard....

If I'd dropped $1000 (or £713.92) on lessons for ANYTHING and not achieved a certain minimum standard of skill and relaxation, then I'd be pretty annoyed as well.

I've never used a coach. I can...

I got it :)
- by adding a more deliberate "hop" from the anchored arm to the spearing side, and tightening up my core, just at that precise moment, to reduce the pressure on the anchor arm. Got some...

Hi Bob,

I agree that Terry has technically better recovery mechanics.

By "vault" I mean:-
1. Low-side arm anchors
2. Body is briskly rotated past the anchor.

I believe it's a widely used term......

Vaulting stroke - Paul Arvin

In the video below of TI coach Paul Arvin swimming with Terry,
it struck me how clearly Arvin's switches show a vaulting action.
He gets a nice surge on every stroke. He's fast.

By contrast, Terry's...

Knocked out another 1500m, estimated TI-RPE 2 (cruise), so that's basically a solved problem and not a fluke.

The singular focus in this swim was linking body roll to gravity and linking
the...

Didn't plan it, but I had the lane to myself, so I could relax properly.

I thought it would be fun to add this to my original...

Doing it with breastroke arms is still great fun.

The game-changer for me in finally keeping my legs up was:
1. engaged glutes
2. relaxed knees

And my current focus is:
3. relaxed (floppy) ankles

This seems to make even a tiny toe-flick 2bk even...
