I love the idea of open water swimming, and I intend to try it next spring. One practical question: do you need to arrange someone with a boat to watch you every time you swim in open water?

Not necessarily. Here in Arizona, for example, there are plenty of protected coves where it's safe to swim without a kayak. No boat zones are perfect. No wake zones are fine too, as long as they're not close to a marina. (When returning to a marina, boaters tend to go to maximum speed and cut their engine when they pass the no wake buoys.)

I suggest joining a local triathlon club. Even if you're not interested in triathlon, that's a great way to get information about good places to swim and to find swim buddies.
