BX, fly is my favorite too. I did Terry's Betterfly DVD a few years back and got hooked quickly. Last week New York Open Water (Dave Barra) joined with the Laughlin family to do a very emotional celebration swim at Terry's favorite spot, Lake Minnewaska. I drove up from MD to NY to join in. It was a nice 3/4 mile course, and the lake is very beautiful. The water was in the 67-70 range which is very chilly for me when I do fly as I get concerned about pulling a muscle in my shoulders. This time I needed to worry more about my legs which took the worst of it. I managed three course laps all butterfly, no wetsuit. I used some petrolium jelly and a rash guard shirt to reduce abrasion and help to keep a touch warmer. May you join me in a long fly swim sometime!

Brian,

I didn't realise just how much of a fly specialist you were. These are incredible feats. I'm no open water swimmer, so won't be making your list any time soon. I can fly one length (25m) fairly comfortably. I've set myself a target of 100m :)

Well, Brian, I was in the sea yesterday, and did some short bouts of butterfly, perhaps 20 strokes at a time.
Amazingly, despite the rolling waves coming in to shore, I didn;t have to modify the arm recovery or breathing compared to my pool stroke.

I tried butterfly is the salted water and its benefits on buyoancy overweighted for me the slight swell.

Another things I tried is Jeremy Stravius (which looks like some others swimmers too) approach to butterfly and it is pretty nice, even though slightly it is less demandig to the more standard approach.
That video is pretty interesting as you see the aforementioned swimmer do both. He runs 200m butterfly with the first 150m in the "more underwater" butterfly and the last 50m using standard technique.
