I'm an average swimmer who would like to get faster chiefly for triathlons, which I do recreationally. I can swim a mile in about 35 mins, and it's far from effortless. I picked up the 2004 version of Total Immersion at the library and am really intrigued, but have some questions about how to start. Help?

1) Do you just work your way through the lessons in chapter 8, one by one until each feels comfortable? One Lesson per workout? Or can I advance more quickly if I feel really comfortable? I guess I take the book to the pool with me?
2) Is there an updated version of the book? I saw a 2009 (I think?) version on Amazon, but not so cheap, since I can buy this one used. Any significant differences?
3) How helpful would the video be? It gets panned a little on Amazon for being so short, but there is this "Perpetual Motion Freestyle" dvd
that seems to do much better. Also more expensive, however. Any recommendations?
4) I have three kids and a busy job and swimming workouts tend to take the longest time of the three (cycling, running, swimming). I feel like I can give 1-2 workouts a week to swimming. Is this enough to get better?

Those are the burning questions for the moment. Any help would be much appreciated!
