Betterfly in Chesapeake Bay Swim!
For my first official swim event ever, I entered the 1-mile division of the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim in Maryland. My goal was to use the relaxation skills Terry taught in Betterfly for Every Body, and attempt to keep to Fly stroke for the full mile. TODAY I DID IT! One of the organizers cheered for me when I went in, and was there with a double high five for me at the finish line. This is SO amazing! I can absolutely guarantee that I did NOT set any records for speed, but while I started last in my "wave" I did NOT finish last in that wave, in my age group, or for my sex. That's OK by me!
I'm hoping to be selected for the 4.4 mile swim next year, but I don't think I'll try to fly the whole thing. I'll probably freestyle until I get in sight of the finish, and then fly for the end to show I still have the energy. THANKS TERRY!!
Brian, that's fantastic. Congratulations! I dream of learning fly and doing it in open water -- so glad to hear it's possible for other than superstar swimmers. Though you might now belong in the category, fly-ing the whole way in your first swim event.
Hi Brian, did you wear a wetsuit? I'm just curious how well the Betterfly approach works with the added bouyancy of a suit. I've yet to learn fly, but I find the suit to make breast stroke difficult so I don't do it in a suit. I feel like a mallard duck - I can't make my hips sink.
Fly in a Wetsuit?
I don't have a wetsuit yet, so I don't know how that would affect it, but your duck comment hits home. Most of my stroke, I'm gliding underwater, so the suit may throw me off. I might have to wear a compensation belt to bring me closer to neutral buoyancy. Something to experiment with.
While I started last in my "wave", I did NOT finish last by overall time, wave, age group, or gender. I'm OK with that!
My best butterfly mile in the pool is about 37 minutes, and average is 45 minutes. I finished the race at chip time 42:46, which is a faster time than my pool average, so that is wonderful! Next year I hope to be selected for the full 4.4 mile swim across the Bay which I will try to complete in freestyle for speed (and to deal with the currents between the bridges), but finish in butterfly for style points.
Not bad for a 50-year old who used a cane before I started learning Tai Chi, ballroom dance and swimming (and I couldn't pass the basic swim test for Scouting 5 years ago)! Thanks to my swim coach Terry Laughlin, dance coach Chip Atwood, Tai Chi coach Vince Tabor, and my Love of My Life Coach Margaret!
And I note my head was not held neutral. I have to work on that...

Distance fly suggestions
When I wanted to start fly, the first thing I did was pickup the Bettterfly DVD. AWESOME breakdown of the stroke in stages with tips for relaxed fly (like I do for distance), and speed fly (racing or more flexible folks). While I "got it" at first and was able to do the stroke, I never "got it" to the point that it was relaxed and fluid. I first worked on deepening and lengthening my glides and got down to about 4 strokes per lap without initial kicks, but very slow, and couldn't maintain it due to running out of air. Terry recommended I increase the stroke count to get more air, and that helped a lot, but I still wasn't in a kaizen mode.
A swim buddy showed how he did 1-arm fly practice to smooth out his body wave. I added that to my freestyle for a few months. I swam with one arm extended forward like a skate position, and did the fly movement with the other arm and switched arms each turn (usually facing the best scenery in the pool of course). A couple of months like that and I went back for a review of the Betterfly, and then in the middle of a lap of 1-arm, I rolled into full fly, and then kept it up for a mile without significant effort! I tend to breath on almost every stroke, and do 7-8 strokes per lap. Since then I've been able to get up to a 5K distance in fly, breaking every 10 laps or 15 min for a quick drink. I don't know how folks like Diana Nyad can go 90 minutes between hydrations!
Concentrate on relaxation and a snake or dolphin like mindset as you undulate your body. Flow with the water.

Thanks to TI dvd of butterfly I started swimming it two weeks ago and I succeded to swim 50 meters without pause the question is;
palms must be out or down before diving ?
