Shane Eversfield
Shane Eversfield has a passion for “kinetic intelligence” that began in his childhood, with swimming, biking and running (along with gymnastics). Little did he know, decades later these three childhood activities would collectively be called “triathlon” by adults. He turned this passion for movement into a lifelong study as he earned a BA in Modern Dance in 1980. The thread of continuity that led from dance to triathlon and swim technique is his fascination with biomechanics and kinesiology.
As a Total Immersion Teaching Professional and Master Coach, he makes full use of his experiences in biomechanics and kinesiology. Shane has extensive experience teaching at the New Paltz Total Immersion Endless Pool Swim Studio - where he has worked with pro triathletes, as well as nationally ranked elite age groupers. He also travels worldwide leading Coach Trainings, and Workshops, including Advanced Freestyle Workshops, and Open Water Camps.
Currently, Shane is available for private instruction at the New Paltz Swim Studio. He is also launching Zendurance Cycling.
Known in the triathlon community as “Zenman”, Shane writes extensively on the sport. He is author of the book “Zendurance”, endorsed by Paula Newby-Fraser. He has also published over 25 magazine articles (USA Triathlon Life, Inside Triathlon, Triathlete and Hammer Nutrition Endurance News). He also produced the dvd "T'ai Chi for Athletes". He regularly posts blogs on the TI website.
“The most effective pursuit of athletic excellence comes from a relentless quest for perfect technique. This requires functional strength, as well as a high degree of kinesthetic awareness and proprioception. Patience, curiosity and attentiveness are essential qualities of the mind, and are inherent in the TI approach to swimming.”
To demonstrate this approach, at age 50, he went on a 4-month “Zen Rampage”: Lake Placid Ironman (19th in AG), USMS 2-Mile Swim National Championship (5th in AG), 24 Hours of Triathlon (8 miles swim, 141 miles bike, 42 miles run - 1st in AG), Virginia Double Iron (4.2M swim, 224M bike, 52.4M run), JFK 50-Mile Run and (7 days later) NCR Trail Marathon (3:36:18, missing Boston qualification by 19 seconds). “There is nothing super-human about this. It just requires graceful and efficient technique. Many athletes have far exceeded this accomplishment.”
Shane has earned USAT All-American Honors 2008 and 2010 and Honorable Mention 2009 and 2011. His greatest race highlight was an 8th in age group at 2008 ITU Long Course World Championship in Almere, Netherlands. In 2010, he raced again at ITU Long Course Worlds (this time in Immenstadt, Germany) and completed the Virginia Double Iron. His latest ultra endeavor: Shawangunk Double
